As Summer Comes, Things Are Happening…

Have you heard of “Trumpets En Chamade?” We all soon will. A new stop is being added to the sanctuary organ as a gift from Mr. and Mrs. James Dewar in memory of their daughter, Dorinda. Voiced louder and brighter than most other stops, the En Chamade has a distinct sound. This particular feature on an organ became popular in the 19th century in Spain and Portugal and later became part of English organs. Today, this stop is found in larger church organs in the United States. The French phrase, en chamade means to “sound a parley” and referred to a trumpet call on the battlefield that signaled a gathering. The installer is the Allegheny Pipe Organ Company, which provides the primary care for WPC’s organ. We look forward with anticipation to this new addition and to enjoying its distinctive tones which will add to the congregation’s enjoyment of an already marvelous instrument. Session anticipates a fall installation – but it could be sooner!

Long before the Presidential election in November there will be an important election in Westmont. The warmth and sun of summer also brings the election of officers for the next three year term ending in 2011. The Congregational Meeting for that election is scheduled for June 29 following worship, with installation and ordination of new officers to take place the following Sunday, July 6.
Many may remember that Westmont Presbyterian Church is in the process of reducing the size of session. Approved by the session and congregation in 2007, the reduction takes place over three years culminating in 2009. By that time the session will consist of 12 elders. This size is more in keeping with the current membership of the church. In 1977 there were 1149 members on the roll and positions for 21 elders. By 2006, membership had declined to 450, but the number of positions for elders remained the same at 21. Deacons, on the other hand, continue at the same level as in former years due to the nature of their work. Deacons visit home bound members, carry out mission and outreach and perform the duties of ushers. Consequently, they are called upon frequently for a variety of activities that require their special talents.
The congregation has been most helpful in suggesting nominees this year and the Nominating Committee, chaired by Gary Lichtenfels, is nearing the end of their work. In addition to a slate of elders and deacons, two auditors will be nominated to perform an elementary audit of the general funds of the church during 2009. (This fulfills a Book of Order requirement.) New Nominating Committee members for next year will also be elected. Members are invited to come and vote!

Enjoy a safe summer and I look forward to seeing you at worship!

Faithfully yours,

Doug
